Gulf Oil Spill

What happened to all the plastic used absorbent boom of the oil spill a year ago to take in the Gulf of Mexico? Their usual fate is to end up in a landfill or incinerated to produce energy.

General Motors and partner companies to go a different way to develop a method to control the oil boom in new parts for Extended-Range Electric Vehicle, the Chevy Volt to recycle. Instead, there is enough material to the Volt, the air deflector for a year of production can be made, Chevrolet announced Monday.

According to GM, the oil boom in the recycling program back 227 miles of boom materials and save £ 212,500 on waste disposal sites.

As part of my job, I regularly present oil analysis training seminars. One of the tests we discuss is ferrous density. I find that this test is seldom well understood, and, probably as a result, is seldom used. Explanation of the Test Ferrous density is the density of ferrous, or more correctly, of ferromagnetic particles distributed in the oil. The other ferromagnetic elements that one might encounter in lubricated components are nickel and cobalt, but in practice, these elements are likely to be present only in comparatively small quantities. Therefore, we are effectively measuring the concentration of magnetic steel alloys. There is no single way to conduct a ferrous density analysis.
